Independent School Districts

For most property owners in Bexar County, school taxes make up more than 50% of the total property tax bill.

There are seventeen independent school districts (ISDs) across Bexar County including Northside ISD, North East ISD, San Antonio ISD, Judson ISD, Southwest ISD, Harlandale ISD, and East Central ISD.

School funding depends heavily on average daily attendance, meaning when attendance drops, state support drops. Many of the ISDs serving Bexar County are facing multi-million dollar deficits. For example, North East ISD has projected a $39 million deficit.

Some districts use bond elections for facilities to relieve pressure on operating budgets, but debt service on the bonds will increases the pressure to raise property taxes.
